President of the Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard has paid an official visit to Georgia, 04.12.2017


President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili officially hosted his Swiss counterpart at the Paresidential Palace. The Georgian and Swiss Presidents held a tête-à-tête meeting, as well as a meeting in an extended format. 

Within the framework of the visit, President of the Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard held a meeting with the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the Chairman of the Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze.

During the meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the parties discussed the development of bilateral relations in a number of directions.The Prime Minister thanked Switzerland for supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and its role as a mediator in Georgia-Russia relations.

The Federal President Doris Leuthard applauded Georgian Government´s remarkable reforms.

PM. Giorgi Kvirikashvili introduced the President of the Swiss Confederation to the details of the Government’s four-point agenda, the country’s economic statistics and leading positions I international rankings.During the meeting, the importance of sharing Switzerland’s experience in education reform and the development of mountainous areas was also emphasized.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia during the meeting with the President of Swiss Confederation expressed the hope that the visit of the President Leuthard will be an important trigger for bilateral cooperation development. He underlined Swiss contribution in democratic development of Georgia and thanked Mrs. Leuthard for technical assistance by Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency in decentralization reforming.

The parties touched upon economic relations and noted that the two countries will soon enact free trade agreement. The parties spoke about grave humanitarian state and human rights violations on occupied territories of Georgia.

As the Speaker stated, the international mechanism shall be established in the occupied regions to monitor the human rights. He hoped for Swiss support.

The President of the Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard met also with Swiss Businessmen in Georgia.
